September 26th is the European Day of Languages, a Council of Europe initiative that celebrates language and cultural diversity. The day aims to highlight the importance of language learning, increase awareness and appreciation of all languages, and encourage lifelong language learning.
The day has been celebrated since 2001 and this year Languages United, Bath School of Languages, is inviting everyone to come and join in the celebrations at a “Share Your Language” workshop. The workshop will give people the opportunity to learn about the language and culture of different countries from native speakers.
Slavenka, Languages United's Director, says “I have always been passionate about languages and I've just started learning my sixth, Chinese. It is wonderful to be able to share your language, and I have enjoyed teaching the languages I know to others. I am very pleased that my children have been brought up bilingually; they are able to speak to their grandparents, relatives and friends abroad and it gives them greater understanding of other cultures.”
“We are inviting everyone interested to join in our initiative to share their language with us. As well as teaching some phrases from each language, we would like to record as many languages as we can during the workshop and will put fragments of people's speech onto our website. It will be wonderful to hear different languages as well as different English accents.”
